verified in collection at Filson Library, Louisville, Kentucky who holds the painting of Gen James Wilkinson. They also have a large collection on Wilkinson and his dealings.

This is the grandson of Gen Wilkinson that Dr Edward Everett Hale, author of "A Man Without a County" met with in Louisville that Hale talks about an unnamed man there who identified himself as Wilkinson's grandson. Hale stated that he spent half a day looking through General Wilkinson's papers in a large chest in the grandson's possession which he found of such significanace he made efforts to have Congress purchase the collection. He recounts how the purchase never took place and how the grandson out of indignation burned all of the letters. Though he may have burned the correspondence he did not destroy the portrait since six years later on November 13, 1882, he sold the subject portrait to Richard H Collins, an attorney in Louisville, Kentucky.

Richard H. Collins
Attorney and Counsellor at Law
No. 11, Courier-Journal Building
Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville, Nov 13, 1882
I have this day and delivered to Richard H. Collins, a portrait of my maternal grandfather, MAJOR GENERAL JAMES WILKINSON, by John Wesley Jarvis which measures inside of frame 24-1/2 x 29-1/2 inches, and is in the original frame as I remember it since I was about eight years old. I am now forty-five years old, and I was born Sept. 26, 1837, in the Old Spanish Ursuline Convent, corner Chartres and Ursuline Streets, New Orleans.

My mother was Stephanie Elizabeth Wilkinson Bigot, twin daughter (her sister died in infancy) of Major General James Wilkinson, and wife of Toussaint Francois Bigot (whose second child I am). She died in 1871, and he in 1868 or 1859, both in New Orleans.

I am their only living child. This is the only life-size portrait of my said grandfather ever painted, was in possession of his widow (my grandmother) until her death about 1859, and since then has been in possession of my mother and ownership ever since. I agree to furnish said Collins, from the Family Bible in my possession, the exact dates which I gave from imperfect memory above. I also sell him the small copperplate profile of my grandfather - for both of which he has this day paid me in full.
