LINGEMAN, FRANK J.
KILLED IN MINE EXPLOSION
FORMER ST. CHARLES BOY IN LIST OF DEAD Frank J. Lingeman, who worked in the mines here for nearly two years, was killed in a mine explosion at Ecces., W. Va., at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The disaster was caused by a gas explosion in the 600 foot level of the mine No. 5. It was followed five minutes later by a second explosion which completely wrecked this mine and partially demolished mine No. 6, a connecting operation. In mine No. 6 there were four dead and 67 injured, and there are entombed in No. 5, 178 miners, and all hope is abandonded for their safety. Anton Erdman and son Anton , also Albert and Otto Griswald all St. Charles who were employed at these mines, telegraphed their families here of their safety. Frank J. Lingeman was born in Essen, Germany, July 5, 1885. There he was graduated from the secondary schools and the Essen Mining College. He had traveled extensively in Europe and Africa, and came to Canada seven years ago where he was engaged as superintendent of a silver mine at Cobalt. Six years ago in March he came to St. Charles and was here most of the time for two years making his home at F.A. Bement's. From here he went to Colorado where was employed as night superintendent of Cokedale Mines. June 20, 1912 he was united in marriage to Miss Loretta McNeil, daughter of a wealthy mine owner of Trinidad. Last year in May he went to Ecces, West, Va., where he held position as overseer, and there he met his death in the explosion in Mine No. 6. Mr. Lingeman has made yearly visits to the Bement's, last May being the last. He was always in the best humor. He had mastered the english language and had become naturalized. He was a Mason in high standing and a leader in his social circle. He leaves a father in Germany and one sister beside his young wife, who is taking his remains to Trinidad for burial.
