King of Denmark and Norway 1766-1808. His parents were king Frederik V and queen Louise of Great Britain. Officially the king reigned for 42 years, but already in 1769 he became mentally unstabile from schizophrenia (as did his British cousin, king George III), and government was placed in the hands of his lifephysician, Count J.F. Struensee. 1766 he married his British cousin Caroline Mathilde (sister of George III). Due to the kings insanity, she fell in love with Count Struensee, and had a daughter with him. A coup d'etat was arranged 1772 by the kings stepmother, dowager-queen Juliane Marie von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. She had the count removed from power and had him decapitated for lese-majesty. The marriage between Christian VII and Caroline Mathilde was annulled, and the queen was exiled to Hannover, where she died 1775 in Celle, where she is interred. 1784 the crownprince, Frederik VI, headed a counter-coup, where he ceased power. He was the real governor for the rest of the kings life.
