MADISON/MT. HOREB — Donald E. Theobald, age 65, died at his home on Wednesday, February 26, 1992, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 21, 1926, to Webster and Julia (Kirch) Theobald. Donald married Dorothy McCann of Madison on May 3, 1980. Surviving are his wife Dorothy; stepchildren, Daniel (Helen) McCann of Madison, Burnelle Ball of Mlddleton, and, Michael (Julie) McCann and Timothy (Cindy) McCann, both of Madison; seven grandchildren; a brother, Robert Theobald of Marshall; Aunt Libby Theobald of Mt. Horeb; two sisters-in-law, Zeanus Drought of Blanchardvllle, and Helen Theobald of Mt. Horeb; and, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Genevieve (Schroeder) Theobald, and two brothers, Jim and John Theobald.

After serving in the Army during World War II, he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1950, he immediately began his Public Works Career with the City of Madison Engineering Department. He was City Engineer from 1968 to 1973. In 1973, he moved to Colorado, where he was Manager of a new community named Pueblo West, Colorado, a municipal engineering consulting firm for nearly four years. Donald's contributions to society were many. He retired in 1989 as a Program Director from the Department of Engineering Professional Development in the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, but returned part-time until his death. He joined the University of Wisconsin Extension, Department of Engineering and Applied Science in 1978 and coordinated continuing education programs for engineers, scientists and technicians from around the world. He served as seminar manager and assistant chairman and established cooperative programs with several other universities, including UW-Eau Claire, UW-Green Bay, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Donald was a Charter Member of Christ Memorial Lutheran Church and a member of the West Madison Optimist Club. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Colorado, Wisconsin and Wyoming, and a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, American Public Works Association, and American Society of Civil Engineers. Donald served as President of the Wisconsin Chapter of APWA, the Southwest Chapter WSPE, and the Southern Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Colorado.

Donald's zest for life was an example for all. His wisdom and energy guided many projects. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes contributions and memorials be sent to Hospice Care, Inc., who were such a great help and comfort during his illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 29, 1992, at the ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME in Mount Horeb, with Reverend Karl Hlllmer officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 1992 at the ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME In Mount Horeb. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery in Dodgevllle.
