During one the heaviest battles in the Pacific Theater the Marines landed on Iwo Jima. 6 Mar 1945 28 American P-51 Mustang and 12 P-61 Black Widow aircraft landed on Iwo Jima, Japan. The 9th Marines tried to gain more ground, but were held down.

Pvt Edward Gill Sr. was Killed in Action (KIA) during this battle. On April 24, 1945 notice was published in the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

On 19 May 1945 the following obituary was published in the St. Louis Post Dispatch: GILL, PFC. EDWARD H. ---Killed in action on Iwo Jima Mar. 6, 1945. Husband of Delores Gill (nee Myers), father of Edward Jr., and William Gill, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Gill, Wright City, Mo., brother of Evelyn Notzaband, Mae Jaspering, and Elmer Gill, S.S. 2-C, William Gill G. M. 2-C and Ora Gill, Kenneth Gill and Forrest Gill. Memorial services at Evengelical Church, Wright City, Mo., Sun., May 20 at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends invited.
