Cal was a son of Robert Jefferson "Big Jeff" Fleming and Margaret (Rose) Fleming. The headstone birth date is incorrect. Please see his brother John's memorial concerning their birth date inscription errors.

Cal married Cordelia Cook in 1889. He was involved, with his brother Henan, in the Ira Mullins Family massacre at Pound Gap, Virginia. The site is now known as "Killing Rock". This was an act of revenge for the murder of Henry Vanover that Ira Mullins was involved in.

Cal was shot to death in Boggs, WV by Big Ed Hall who led a Posse from Wise Co., VA that included "Doc" Swindall and John H. Branham. Big Ed Hall and "Doc" Swindall were both wounded, John H. Branham and Cal Fleming died, and Henan Fleming was captured after the wild shoot-out.
