Roman Catholic Saint. Born the daughter of Bela IV and Maria Laskarina of Nicaea. In 1239 she was married to Boleslaw V of Cracow, but they both took a vow of chastity. During his reign she spent much time almsgiving and with other charitable works. After her husbands death in 1279 she sold her possessions and gave the money to the poor. She also founded the Poor Clares monastery in Stary Sacz where she retired to. In 1289 she took the vows and died there three years later. She was beatified in 1690 by Pope Alexander VIII and was canonized in 1999 by Pope John Paul II. She is patron saint of Poland and Lithuania and of poor miners. She is usually depicted as an abbess with a crown.
