Born Margaret Pattison Thom, she was known as Makereti, a transliteration of Margaret. Married in 1891, she became Margaret Dennan.
With her half-sister Bella, she formed a cultural group whose members sang and danced for visitors. The group toured, to Australia in 1909 and then, in 1911, to Britain. Here she met up with Richard Staples-Browne, whom she had previously guided in New Zealand, and she returned to the UK in 1912 to marry him, becoming Mrs Richard Staples-Browne and taking up residence in the Oxfordshire countryside, ultimately at Oddington Grange on the edge of Otmoor. Her son from a previous marriage, William (Te Aonui) Dennan, lived with them, and in 1921 he went to study anthropology at The Queen's College, Oxford.
