Joe was drafted on 9 May 1967, then he enlisted and volunteered for duty in Vietnam.
On 31 October 1968, Specialist Four Joseph Michael Bowman was serving in A Company, 54th Signal Battalion, I Field Force, in Nha Trang Province in South Vietnam.
On that day, SP4 Bowman was killed when the helicopter, of which he was the door gunner, crashed in Khanh Hoa Province. He died from his wounds and his body was recovered.
