He was born Sept. 1, 1917, in Tiffin. Mr. Adams served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged as first sergeant after 38 months of service, 23 of which were in the European Theater.
He was an entrepreneur whose career encompassed banking, communications, real estate development and energy exploration. He was publisher of the Lorain Journal and president of Great Lakes Broadcasting Co., which operated nine radio stations in six states. With partners, his enterprises took him halfway around the world to Jakarta, Indonesia, where he operated a business for seven years. In Ohio, he was trustee of the Lorain County Community College, chairman and trustee of Lorain County Medical Foundation, a member of the board of Lorain Central Bank and president/director of the Lorain Memorial Association.
When he and his wife moved to Fairhope, he was not quite ready to retire, so he joined with other local businessmen to invest in Fairhope real estate. In 2004, he was the recipient of a doctor of humane letters from Tiffin University, which he had attended in his youth. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Mayor Tim Kant proclaimed Sept. 1 as Carl Adams Day in Fairhope in recognition of his remarkable and interesting career.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ann Rickabaugh Adams; two daughters, Caryl Adams of La Mesa, Calif., and Hallie Schiavoni of Willoughby Hills; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.
His memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2012, at the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope, Ala. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.
Graveside services will begin at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug 3, 2012, at Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore
