Nannie Choates-Johnson of Shady Bluff Street, Durham, N.C. transitioned from earth to glory on July 19, 2012 while peacefully sleeping. "Nan" was born on February 24, 1939 to the late Bennie and Madge Watson in Sanford, N.C.

Serving spiritually since 1974, Nan was an active and devoted member of Peace Missionary Baptist Church. She served on several committees and boards including the Trustee Board and Pastor's Aid. She sang in the Senior Choir and also participated in the Nurse's Club.

Professionally, Nan dedicated her life to the care of others as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Duke Medical Center retiring after 43 years of committed service. Her commitment to nursing was truly evident when she continued visiting patients well after her retirement in 2007 only to cease when her own health began to deteriorate.

Nan was married to the late Robert L. Choates Sr. until becoming a widow after 29 years of marriage. Later on, Nan reunited with her high school sweetheart, James L. Johnson, whom she ultimately wedded on July 6, 2002. James and Nan were inseparable. Like two peas in a pod, the two were always together.

Nan was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Jessie H. Watson (Judy); and beloved son, Nathan A. Choates.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving husband James L. Johnson; her loving and devoted daughter and grandson, Whanessa V. Choates and Marques A. Johnson; loving daughter and son, Yvette Choates Burton and William "Terry" Choates (Elsie). She also leaves her loving and faithful sister Cathy W. Jones (Bill); three loving brothers, Willie G. Watson (Doris), Larry L. Watson (Loscie), Theodore J. Watson (Betty). Nan was a doting grandmother and aunt to her two granddaughters and nieces and nephews. She leaves a host of loving relatives and friends whose lives she deeply touched and they hers in countless ways.

The family would like to thank the staff of doctors and nurses who cared for Nan during her time of infirmity. A special thanks is extended to Nan's personal health aid, Tanisha, who provided tremendous support and care over the last few months.

Services will be at Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Durham, N.C. on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Durham.
