Ellen Lucille Bernardo, 94, Railroad Avenue, DuBois, died Wednesday, June 21, 2012. She was the daughter of Edith and Robert Harris.
Ellen married Anthony "Tony" Bernardo in 1933 and took pride in raising three children Jim (Perk) Bernardo, Russ (Joan) Bernardo and Diane Bernardo of DuBois.
Recognized for her political activism, Ellen received a Pennsylvania House of Representatives citation, was named Vice-Chairwoman Emeritus DuBois Democratic Party for lifetime service, and is listed in the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame for her sterling voting record.
Ellen was once a champion bowler for the Jim's Atlantic Women's Bowling Team, raised beagles for hunting and field trials with her husband, and loved outdoor activities. She cooked excellent wild game dishes and baked banana bread for others to enjoy. Ellen was a loving mother and greatest cheerleader of her family's pursuits in sports, careers and community involvement.
Ellen served many organizations including the J.E. DuBois Fire Company Ladies' Auxiliary, V.F.W. Drill Team, American Cancer Society Daffodil Days, Tom Mix Festival Committee, and DuBois Democratic City Committee.
In addition to her three children, Ellen is survived by six grandchildren, fifteen
great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, four sisters, one brother, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation is from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home, DuBois.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 25,. 2012 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home with Pastor Charles M. Lee, Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in Morningside Cemetery.
Memorials may be placed with the charity of the donor's choice.
