Dow was in the Philippines with H Battery of the 200th Coast Artillery Corps (CAC) when Imperial Japanese began their invasion on 8 Dec 1941. On 9 Apr 1942, the 200th CAC was among the American and Filipino forces on Bataan when they were compelled to surrender. the "Bataan Death March" followed. Dow was held as a POW until liberated from Osaka Main POW Camp Chikko, Japan where he was used as slave labor.
