Carl was the second born child, and son born to the union of Norris Scott Gann and Odessa Pearl Peeples. Born in Georgia his family moved to Harris County Texas when he was a small boy. Laid to rest 27 Oct 1948.

He mustered into the Navy 30 Sept 1941 WWII on the USS Finch as an Electrician's mate 2nd class. His ship was in the Pacific Theatre fighting for the Philippine Islands. Captured in 1945 and put into a POW camp Sendai Sonshu Japan 38-141.

The Japanese surrendered 02 Sept 1945. Almost immediately the US forces started dropping food and supplies on the known POW camps where US troops were being held. It was one of these food drops that Carl was killed. One of the parachutes did not open landing it in full force on the building that Carl was being held prisioner in. See

*Memories of Alonzo C. Meridith"

This was an unfortunate loss of a son, and brother, but he received full honors as a death during WWII.

Below is a poem that recently came to light in a Texas newspaper dated 2012.

This poem was written by Carl's mother Odessa Pearl Gann and it was placed carefully into a bible in 1947. The bible was handed down three or four generations and found by Bennie Brookshire and she sent it to the Texas newspaper.

"In Memories lest we Forget"

Time can not erase the picture of a laughing brown eyed boy, who was so tall and handsome, his mothers pride and joy.

Just one year ago my darling you came back to me. We brought you home from many miles far across the sea.

With loving hands and tender care we laid you at last-to rest.

Was the least that we could do, when you had done your best.

Sleep on and on in peace my darling, until your face again I see. No-one can ever take your place in my memory.

"I would like to thank my cousin Pam (Gann) Marshall for sharing the article in the Texas paper with me"
