John Albert Lee Sneed was born to William Henry Sneed and Martha Lucinda Avans in Ooltewah, James County, Tennessee. This county, made up of a small part of Bradley and the eastern third of Hamilton counties in 1871, was incorporated back into Hamilton County in 1919. John was raised in and around McMinn County, Tennessee, but left home at about 17 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in Kentucky, serving in the 2nd Kentucky Infantry, Company M during the Spanish American War. He was discahrged in 1898 and returned to Tennessee. He re-enlisted 6 months later in Tennessee in 1899, served in the 11th Infantry,Company F, and was discharged in 1902 in Ponce,Puerto Rico. He met his wife during his tour of duty in Puerto Rico and remained there after his discharge. He and his wife, Julia Gonzalez y Rojas, raised 6 children: Maria Angelica, Eveline Maria, William, Cristobal, Roberto and Lillie Belle. John's work on the evaporation machines for the sugar cane industry took him to San Pedro De Macoris, Dominican Republic in the 1930's, remaining there until his death in 1951.
