ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC - Ella Mae Alexander Gore, 64, passed away on May 31, 1967, in Roanoke Rapids, NC. She was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Dixon Alexander, (daughter of John Gurney and Georgia Evans Dixon of Wilson County, NC) and her second husband, Freeman Alexander. (There is a dispute about his correct first and middle name, which could be just Freeman, John F., or Freeman A.)
Ella Mae's mother, Mary, was previously married to Wiley Howard Sumblin (I have seen it spelled Summerlin, Sumbiln, and Sumberlyn), but at least one of their three children's, and Ella Mae's mother, Mary's, gravestones and death certificates, have Sumblin on them. So, the newspaper clippings of their obituaries have the wrong spellings. I've also seen Ella Mae with the Sumblin last name, which is incorrect, according to her birth record, which shows Freeman Alexander as her father. Ella Mae was the only daughter from the 2nd marriage.
There are birth and death records for Ella Mae Alexander Gore, her husband, her mother, her 2 half-brothers, and her half-sister from the same area. But not much at all about Freeman Alexander, her father. Just 2 city directory listings him with his wife, Mary, in Rocky Mount, NC, and one census. This is why his death date seems to be an estimate, since Ella Mae wasn't born until 1903, and it is in the birth records index with Freeman Alexander as the father of Ella Mae Alexander. But no other paperwork seems to exist beyond that. I've been unable to locate his or Ella Mae's grandmother, Georgia Evans Dixon's, birth or death certificates or SSDI paperwork to show their exact birth and death dates, cause of death, who their parents were, or where they were originally from, etc.
Ella Mae and Curt were married for over 30 years when she passed away. She died 4 hours before the 4th child of her son, Bob, with his 4th wife, Mary, John Curtis "Johnny" Gore, was born. So, Bob was in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with his mother when she passed away, while his wife, Mary Hudson Gore, was giving birth to their son, in Florence, SC.
Her grandson, Johnny, that she died 4 hours before he was born, passed away in his sleep at the age of 42, on May 3, 2009, in Lincolnton, NC, and is buried there.
Ella Mae's husband, Curt, lived for 12 more years in the same house in Roanoke Rapids, NC, that they had lived in during their long marriage. They are buried together in Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC, next to their second son, Dan, and his wife, Edith. Their first-born son, Bob, is buried in Pink Hill, NC.
As of February 2015, Ella Mae has 5 living grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren (of which 1 has now passed away at the age of 18 months, by homicide, which was caused by criminal child neglect by the mother's (who is not Ella Mae's granddaughter, just an ex-in-law) boyfriend). He blamed the child's, Nevaeha Denise Sprouse, death on her choking on a glass of iced tea. He received 62 years in jail with the possibility of parole sometime in the future. The mother is still waiting for her day in court, while she sits in jail charged with accessory after the fact of a felon because she covered for him.) Ella Mae also has 10 great-great-grandchildren, who are all alive and well.
