WILLIAMSTON – Colleen Stokes Banks, 83, formerly of Williamston, widow of Dr. James L. Banks, Jr., died Friday, May 6, 2011, at the Presbyterian Foothills Community Retirement Center in Easley. Born in Greer, she was a daughter of the late James Alexander and Rebecca Babb Stokes. Mrs. Banks was a graduate of Furman University, class of 1947, formerly taught elementary school in Baltimore, MD, and was also a hospice volunteer. An avid gardener, she was active in the garden club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Williamston. Surviving are daughters, Rebecca Peddicord (Herschel "Buzz"), of Brookfield, WI, and Kathryn Anne Banks (Wharton Winstead), of Charleston; son, James L. Banks, III (Beth Templeton), of Greenville; sisters, Virginia Heath, of Travelers Rest, and Gladys Powell, of Greer; brother, Arnold Stokes, of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Kathryn Fruth, Jake Banks and Colleen Baughn; and great-grandsons, Will and Jack Fruth. The family will receive friends from 9-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Brad Barden and the Rev. Julie Schaaf officiating. Entombment will follow in the Greenville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621. Condolences: www.graymortuary.com
