JoAnn was a 1961 graduate of Dickinson High School and a 1965 graduate of Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bob Anderson and her son Joseph Edwin [Joe] Abernathy. She is survived by her husband Edwin and daughter Trisha and one grandson Derek Watson; one sister Betty Brimer; Brothers, Bill Anderson and Donnie Anderson; and many nieces [including me] and nephews. Her life was dedicated to coaching and teaching young people, she worked for 35 years in the Texas public school system. JoAnn was a very spiritual person and throughout her battle with cancer she continued to be an inspiration to others, offer encouragement and passing out spiritual literature and angel pins. One of my other aunts, her sister-in-law, commented on how she had called her to try to encourage her and ended up being the one that was encouraged and lifted up before the conversation was over. In the two weeks prior to her death she lost her son, Joseph Edwin Abernathy, in a fire and a nephew, in a drowning. Her grief was more than her weakened condition could sustain. This memorial page is dedicated to an aunt that I always admired. She made me laugh and in the end she made me cry.
