Ivor William Petrie

20 November 1936 - 8 February 2001

Born to missionary parents on the 20th day of November 1936, Ivor William Petrie began a life that would cross many borders, reach many cultures and touch many hearts. His parents, Pastor William Woodfield Petrie ("Poppa") and Irralee Blanche Petrie ("Nanna") were stationed at Vailoa Training College in Western Samoa where Poppa served as Principal of the Training School as well as Mission President.

Ivor's older brother Arthur, and younger sister Lorna were also born in the mission fields. The trio had a close and special relationship, and throughout the years they enjoyed many happy and humorours times together.

In the Spring of 1941 the missionary family moved to Sydney, Australia, after a short furlough in New Zealand. There Ivor commenced school at the Adventist Primary School in Wahroonga.

During 1945 Ivor moved with his family to Brisbane. While there they were delighted to see the end of the Second World War.

At age 16, in August 1952, Ivor once again moved with his family to Christchurch, New Zealand. Since this time, Ivor's life has crisscrossed between Christchurch and many other places around the world, but he has always regarded Christchurch as his home.

Ivor began his early career with the Sanitarium Health Food Company, starting at the Lewisham factory, he then moved up to Auckland, followed by some time at Palmerston North, and finally returning to Christchurch.

While in Christchurch, Ivor met his lovely bride to be, Margaret Evelyn Swaine. A genuine friendship was established and they were married on November 30, 1959 in the Papanui Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Ivor and Margaret's family soon grew to include their three children, Raewyn, Robert and Kevin. Ivor was a wonderful father who regarded the lives of his family as an inspiration and a blessing.

As an life-time employee of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Ivor served time in both the South Pacific and the Trans-Africa Divisions, in accounting and administrative capacities.

In January 1967 the young family moved to Warburton, Australia, were Ivor worked at the Signs Publishing House, followed by the Adventist Hospital. While there Ivor expressed an interest in mission service. This led to three assignments in Eastern Africa. Beginning in October 1970, Ivor served as an Accountant to the Division for eighteen months, followed by Manager of the Malamulo Mission Publishing House for three years. Lastly he served as Assistant Treasurer for the Trans-Africa Division for eighteen months.

In October 1976 the family returned to the South Pacific Division where Ivor served as the South New Zealand Adventist Book Centre manager for two and a half years, followed by the same position in Auckland for eighteen months.

December 1980 saw the family moving once again - this time to Palmerston North where Ivor served for three years as Longburn Adventist College Accountant and Assistant Business Manager.

Returning to Christchurch at the beginning of 1984, Ivor served four years as Secretary-Treasurer of the South NZ Conference of the SDA Church. This was followed by one year as Business Manager at Fulton Adventist College in Fiji, and nearly seven years as Finance Controller, Adventist Media Centre, Sydney.

Ivor and Margaret retired to their Christchurch home in October 1996. A little over a year later he was diagnosed as having advanced non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Ivor enjoyed life, he enjoyed people. He was a champion and a real survivor.
