Fred Oscar Hembree, 91, of, Villa Rica, died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at The Oaks of Carrollton.

He was born in Villa Rica on September 15, 1920, the son of the late James Oscar Hembree and the late Allie Couch Hembree.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in "G" Company, 104th Infantry Battalion of a fighting combat division known as the Timberwolves. He fought across Belgium, Holland and Germany before the war ended in 1945.

After returning home from Germany, he graduated from Agriculture School and began a life of hard work and generosity. He was a carpenter, cabinet maker and gardener. He was an avid reader and loved to watch the Atlanta Braves.

He was a Deacon Emeritus of Flat Rock Baptist Church, where he was surrounded by family and many good friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 63 years, Mary Nell Tyson Hembree; two sisters and their husbands, Ozell Hembree Waldrop (Ralph) and Mildred Hembree Boyd (Horace); six brothers and their wives, Ruel (Mae), Rayford (Mary Kathryn), Virlyn(Frances), Guy (Reba), Lawrence, and Ralph (Gladys), and first wife Udell Glenn Hembree.

Surviving are his three children, David Hembree of Kennesaw; Dennis Hembree of Duluth; and Susan Hembree Shelton of Cleveland, Tennessee; a brother, Hugh Dorsey Hembree of Villa Rica; extended relatives and a number of close friends and his little dog, Little Bit II.

A graveside service with military honors was held Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Glenn Memorial Gardens Flat Rock Road, Villa Rica.

Pallbearers were grandsons and nephew.

After high school, Fred stayed with his cousins, The Couch family in Alabama to help with their work around the farm after school. When he signed up with the army, he was stationed at Fort McClellan in Alabama, as well. He had a brief marriage 1 1/2 years with Udell Glenn of Curry, Walker county, Alabama who was 3 years his junior. She died while he was overseas, he came home for her services.

Mr. Fred was a sweet soul and missed by many.
