Funeral services were held at the family home on North Van Street Friday at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Tomlinson officiating. The deceased is survived by his wife, four sons and five daughters. He was a native of Tennessee, but had lived in Oklahoma for more than a quarter of a century. Former Jasper Man, Dies at Vinita.
J. M. Etter returned Saturday evening from Vinita, Okla., where he buried his father the day before. Deceased lived east of Jasper many years and was well liked in this community. A Vinita paper has the following to say of the life and character of Mr. Etter:
"John M. Etter, who has been a resident of Vinita almost 30 years departed this life at the family home on North Vann Street Wednesday evening, aged 84 years, last January, of heart failure.
"Deceased was a native of Tennessee, moving to Missouri when 7 years of age with his parents. From Missouri he came to Vinita 29 years ago the 25th of February. Mr. Etter lived the kind of a life all good men live. The writer is not aware of deceased having had a single enemy. He lived a life of strictly attending to his own business. He and Mrs. Etter raised a large family of useful men and women, and though distantly scattered over a large portion of the United States all the children except one were here to attend the funeral.
"Deceased was a Union soldier in the Civil War, having entered the service at Springfield, Mo.
"The surviving members of the family are his good wife and the following children: J. M. Etter, jr., of Jasper, Mo.; Mrs. Ella Bell of Golden City, Mo.; Ferd Etter of Tucson, Ariz.; George Etter of Iowa; Mrs. Charles Sutton of Chelsea, Okla.; Mrs. Clarence Jackson of Parsons, Kans.; Miss Nora Etter of this city; Mrs. Agnes Hughes of Los Angeles, Cal. In addition to these there is E. C. Chambers, a commission merchant of Kansas City, Mo., a nephew who was raised by the deceased. The entire family except Mrs. Hughes of Los Angeles is here."
(The Jasper News, 30 Oct 1922, p. 5, col. 5, middle)
Corrections to the obituary: The first son listed is James M., not John M. and therefore not a Jr. The oldest son Thomas C. is not listed and he did not die until 1930. Also, there are three daughters listed here that I did not have a previous record of from his Civil War pension file, so I am checking on Mrs. Charles Sutton, Mrs. Clarence Jackson, and Mrs. Agnes Hughes.
