Mrs. Carter effectionatley known as "Granny" to her friends and relatives, always took an active interest in progress about her, and was always willing to try a new invention. She took her first motor car ride about 1900, when such things were- considered outlandish.
Clear Memory
She often related life in Civil War times, when women were left alone, horses commandeered by troops, and all work had to be done by oxen. Clearly fixed in her mind were the details of prairie treks semi-annually to trading post to buy necessities.
Although she never quoted any formula for long life she smoked a pipe for 60 years. After a series of stomach ailments a doctor advised a pipe. "Granny claimed after she got used to it she never suffered from stomach trouble again.
