Jay was born in Fisk, MO and died at Three Rivers Healthcare in Poplar Bluff. A lifelong resident of Butler County, Mr. Mondy was well known for his work as an educator, his participation in politics, the opinionated letters sent to the DAR's editor, his charity work and his dedication to family and friends. He enjoyed working with Habitat for Humanity, and served as president for the organization until he became ill. He married Doris Layton on Dec. 27, 1953 and to this union three children were born. Mr. Mondy was a teacher, coach, and later superintendent of the Twin Rivers School District. Even after his retirement, he continued to work as an instructor at Mingo Job Corps. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1961. Active in politics, in 1968, he ran for Missouri's 10th district seat in the U.S. Congress. In 1976, he served as campaign manager for Jerry Litton. He spent the last years of his life working on his book, "Time to Lay By", a collection of stories about the Ozarks.
