John Andrew Ferguson enlisted in Company G, 188th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for a 1-year term of service, March 3, 1865. He was mustered out September 21, 1865 after the end of the war and the regiment was no longer needed. Rank: Private. His name is on Panel #24 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. See www.soldiersandsailors.com for more information.

In the 1870 U.S. Census for Ward 5 in Cleveland, John A. Ferguson appeared as 44 years old, working in a cooper shop, born in New Brunswick. Also in the household was his wife, Eunice, 43, daughter, Anna, 20, both born in Ohio. Also shown were George H. Palmer, 21, a railroad conductor, born in England and Louise Palmer, 16, born in Indiana. The 1880 U.S. Census for Cleveland showed John in the household on St. Clair Street, 53, a laborer, born in New Brunswick as were both of his parents. Wife Eunice E., was 52, born in Ohio with both parents born in Massachusetts. Anne, 26, was still living with her parents working as a dressmaker. "Louise" Palmer became Louisa A. Palmer, 26, now listed as a daughter with three grandchildren: George H, 7; John M., 3, and Louisa, 1, all born in Ohio.

On November 5, 1884, John Ferguson applied for a soldiers' invalid pension which was issued as Certificate #452639. He appeared in the 1890 U.S. Veterans' Census, still residing in Cleveland.

At the time of John's death from "cerebral softening" his address was given as 375 Hamilton. He was buried in a plot set aside for Civil War veterans in Section 72 at Woodland Cemetery, June 22, 1900. Eunice E. Ferguson applied for a soldier's widow's pension, June 28, 1900 which was issued as Certificate #498965 in Ohio.

In the 1900 U.S. Census for Ward 5 in Cleveland, Eunice was shown as 73 years old, head of the household, born July 1827, married for 52 years, with 1 of 4 children still living. (Daughter Louisa A. had died in typhoid fever, October 23, 1892, at 38 years of age, and was buried in Section 69, Tier 5, Grave 22, at Woodland Cemetery.) Annie E. W., now her only living child, was 50, born March 1850, single, and still working as a dressmaker. John M. Palmer, was now listed as a nephew, born February 1877, was single, working as a theater electrician, and Willard H. Palmer, was also listed as a nephew, 17, born October 1882 working as a machinist. Both were born in Ohio. The 1910 U.S. Census for Cleveland showed Eunice as head of the household, 83, a widow. Anna E., daughter, was listed as 60, single, and working as a dressmaker.

At the time of her death from arteriosclerosis, February 2, 1912, Eunice's address was given as 1722 Lakeside Avenue, Cleveland. She was buried with her daughter, Louisa, in Section 69, Tier 5, Grave 22 at Woodland Cemetery, February 28, 1912.
