William C. Ritzel - JONESBOROUGH

William C. Ritzel, 89, of Jonesborough, TN, formerly of Hendersonville, NC, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2009, at his daughter's residence.

Born in Minersville, PA, he was the son of the late Clarence A. and Ethel W. Ritzel and brother of the late Doris R. Budenz. He was married to the love of his life, Shirley I. Ritzel, for sixty-seven years before she passed away on August 12, 2009.

He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1942. He played football at Penn State and spotted his future wife, Shirley, there while she sang with the Jan Savitt Band. He served in WWII in the Army Air Corps as a navigator on a bomber. He was in the Pacific theater, and he and his crew were in the first wave of Americans into Japan after the surrender.

Prior to moving to Hendersonville, NC, he lived in various towns in PA, NJ, and OH as he pursued his career as director of marketing, primarily in the automotive industry. He continued in his career after moving to NC before his retirement.

He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Hendersonville, NC, for thirty-one years and an active volunteer in his adopted southern home. He was a member of the Hendersonville Shrine and the Royal Order of Jesters, active in the symphony guild and various civic organizations. He faithfully donated blood through the Red Cross until one and one half years ago.

His faith and his family were the center of his life. He was a sincere Christian and an ardent patriot.

He is survived by his daughter, Virginia R. Borthwick, and her husband, Thomas, of Jonesborough, TN; his son, William C. Ritzel, Jr. and his wife, Delisa Laterzo, of Steamboat Springs, CO; three granddaughters, Melissa L. Borthwick and husband , James Porter, Kristen B. Johnson and husband, Todd, Melissa R. Turner and husband, Jeff; three grandsons, Thomas R. Borthwick, Jr. and wife, Joanna, Scott M. Ritzel and wife, Kate, Austin A. Ritzel; ten great grandchildren, Abigail, Henry, and Oliver Borthwick, Emma Grace Johnson , Samantha, Madison, and Blake Turner; Payton, Troy, and Luke Ritzel; three nieces and three nephews, including a special loving nephew, G. Charles Budenz II of Escondido, CA.

Services will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at Thos. Shepherd and Son Church Street Chapel in Hendersonville, NC. Rev. Bill Campbell will officiate. Entombment will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, P.O. Box 1510, Ranson, WV 25438 or to Medical Center Hospice, 101 Med Tech Parkway, Johnson City, TN 37604.
