Mrs. Murphy was born in Rumsey, Kentucky on August 22, 1932 a daughter of the late William Gillaspie and Ruth Gillaspie. She had moved to Pittsylvania County in 1974 where she was a homemaker. Mrs. Murphy attended Concord United Methodist Church.

On July 16, 1949 she was married to the late Herbert Owen Murphy.

Mrs. Murphy is survived by three sons, Shawn Murphy & wife Christy of Danville, VA, Michael O. Murphy & wife Diana of Flowery Branch, GA, James E. Murphy of Eugene, OR, two daughters Patricia M. OÂ' Neil & husband Patrick of San Diego, CA, & Linda M. Conn & husband Steve of Eugene, OR ., 11 Grandchildren & 7 Great Grandchildren.
