Frederick Perry DeCOURSEY and Edna Mae FERREL, dau. of William Lawrence and Mabel (STORRS) FERREL, were married, 21 June 1921, in Des Moines, Iowa. They lived at Annandale, Minnesota until 1926 when Fred DeCOURSEY sold his interest in the Mears' Cottage Grove Resort in Annandale to his cousin, Mason MEARS. Fred moved his family to Minneapolis and went in to the advertising business with Fawcett publications. Billy FAWCETT was involved in several ventures including a publication called "Captain Billy's Whiz Bang", the Breezy Point Resorts, and Breezy Point Silver Foxes. Fred P. DeCOURSEY took a job as advertising editor of the magazine and put much of the money he made from the sale of Mears' Cottage Grove resort in to the Silver Fox venture. He lost most of this money in the stock market crash of 1929 when expensive fur coats went out of fashion.

When the Great Depression hit, Fred P. DeCOURSEY lost the new home he had built to foreclosure; and he moved his family to a rented home on a small piece of acreage in Fridley Twp., Anoka Co., MN. at 3725 NE Marshall St. The house was one of the buildings of the abandoned Swanson Tile Brick factory. Here he raised chickens and pigs and had a small garden to help the family survive during the hard times. They resided here until the fall of 1947.

He also worked as a Standard Oil gas-station attendant at the intersection of Cenrral Ave and East Hennepin, and sold shoes for J.C. Penney Co. on East Hennepin Av. and sold shoes at Nate's Economy Shoe Store on Central Avenue N.E., Minneapolis. During the summer months, he would open a produce stand and sold fireworks in the front yard of his home to bring in extra income. Some of the produce that he sold was grown on 6 acres of RR property in back of his home in Fridley and some was provided by David BIRD, a long time family friend and truck gardener in Richfield, Minnesota and his Son Bill's future father-in-law.

During World War II, Fred P. DeCOURSEY worked as a machinist at the New Brighton ammunition plant and later at the Northern Pump Navy Ordinance plant in Fridley, MN. After the war he went to work as supervisor of parts inspection at U.S. Thermo Control (later THERMOKING, Inc).
