Murder Victim. Kayla was shot to death by 6 year old Dedrick Owens in their 1st grade classroom at Buell Elementary School in Mount Morris, Michigan. Dedrick obtained the gun from his uncle's house and brought it to school to show it off. He pointed the gun at Kayla and screamed "I hate you" and shot her once in the neck, she died half an hour later. Kayla's story became one of the focal points for filmmaker Michael Moore's documentary "Bowling For Columbine." Kayla became the youngest victim of school shootings, and because of Dedrick's age he can not be held accountable for his actions. But Jamelle James, Dedrick's uncle was sentenced to 2 years and 5 months in jail because he possessed the gun that was used to kill Kayla.
