Joseph Richard Friend, 81, 8660 SE Messer Rd., died at 10:05 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at St. Johns Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., following an illness.
Mr. Friend was born Nov. 17, 1920, at Pittsburg, Kan. His parents were Charley and Bertha Aubert Friend. He had lived on the farm near Crestline, Kan., for 50 years.
Joseph worked at the Empire District Power Plant at Riverton, Kan., from March 1952 until his retirement in February 1983. He was also a self-employed farmer.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church, Galena, Kan. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Columbus, Kan.; Spring River Boat and Ski Club, Riverton, Kan.; the Columbus (Kan.) Coin Club, and the American Legion, LaFeria, Texas. He enjoyed traveling to Texas during the winter months.
He was married to Maxine Douglas on Nov. 29, 1941, at Little Rock, Ark. She died April 15, 1977.
He then married Treffell Robinson Stempke on Dec. 28, 1979, at Columbus, Kan. She survives.
Additional survivors include his children and spouses, Cathy and Jerrie Stone, Neosho, Mo., Janice and Mike Young, Havelock, N.C., Doug and Sandi Friend, Terre Haute, Ind., Joleen Barnhart, Wichita, Kan., Dorothy and Jim Oberbeck, Scammon, Kan., and Sandra and Joe McCright, Cincinnati, Ohio; step-son and spouse, Bill and Linda Stempke, Moorpark, Calif.; step-daughter-in-law, Nancy Stempke, Long Beach, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and 7 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two stepsons, Darrell D. Stempke and Gus Stempke, and one grandchild, Abraham Joseph McCright.
A Rosary Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 8:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2002, at St. Patricks Catholic Church, Galena, Kan. Fr. Charles Middleton will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery, Pittsburg, Kan.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Brett Stone, Jon Heistand, Freddy Jo Heistand, Matthew Friend, Richard Friend and Bryan Best.
