Her father James Hamilton died in 1858 and Elizabeth's mother then married Jacob A Slonaker in 1860. This gave Elizabeth 4 half-sisters and one half-brother as her mother had five children with her second husband. After her mother's accidental drowning, some of the younger kids were adopted by other families since they were so young when their father Jacob died in 1872.
