Francis E. Carey, 87, of Hampton NH, died on Jan. 20, 2001, at Exeter Hospital. He was born in Norton VT on May 21, 1913, the son of Charles L. and Cora (Bennett) Carey. He graduated from Canaan (VT) High School and the Concord Business College and then attended the University of New Hampshire while employed full-time in the Athletic Department.

Mr. Carey was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from 1936 until his retirement in 1968, as supervisory administrative officer of the Planning Department. He was a member of the Naval Civilian Administrators Association. He was then employed by Tobey & Merrill Insurance Company and also worked for several years as a supervisor for the state Department of Transportation at the Hampton toll station.

A Freemason, Mr. Carey was a 50-year veteran and past master of Star in the East Lodge 59 F&AM Exeter, and was a dual charter member of St. James Lodge 102 F&AM Hampton. In 1970 and 1971, he served as District Deputy Grand Master of the 1st Masonic District of the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire. Mr. Carey was a recipient of the Major General John Sullivan meritorious service medal, and was past president and longtime director of the Exeter Masonic Association. He also served as presiding officer of Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth-Dover, and was made honorary member of the Supreme Council 33rd degree at Boston in 1969. Mr. Carey was also a member of the New Hampshire Consistory Valley of Nashua, the East Gate Club of Seabrook, and the Seacoast Bridge Club at the Seabrook Community Center.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Helen (Gill) Carey, in 1992, and son Dr. Peter W. Carey in 1990.

Family members include his niece Geraldine Cross of Canaan VT.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.
