Mrs. Shifflett was born November 10, 1924 in Elkton and was the daughter of the late Henry and Addie Eppard Dean. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl V. Shifflett, step-father, Matthew (Mac) Dean and a sister, Christine Hensley.
Irene was a member of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church and served on the Alter Guild and in her youth attended Mt. Olivet Christian Church. She retired from American Safety Razor in Verona after 31 years of service. At the age of 61 she ran a 5 mile marathon in Richmond and was a volunteer at the Verona Food Bank. After retirement she traveled with her daughter, Faye throughout the United States and enjoyed visiting her family, friends, sewing, gardening and flowers.
Survivors include her children, Carolyn Shifflett Griffis, Richmond, Wayne A. Shifflett, Truman V. Shifflett (Monika), and Faye Shifflett; brothers, Elwood Dean and Earl Dean; a sister, Margaret Shifflett; six grandchildren, Greg (Kelli), Donna (Marty), Christy (Steve), Pam, Heidi, Serena (Chris); ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at the Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, Lynnwood on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Stuart Wood and Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 ~ 8:00 on Thursday evening at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. In keeping with her wishes her casket will remain closed.
