German SS-Brigadeführer und Generalmajor der Waffen-SS during World War II. Commanded the 10.SS Panzer Division Frundsberg and fought in the German defense against the Allied airborne plan "Operation Market Garden", he was known for trying to blow up the Nijmegen Bridge to prevent the British Armored column from crossing the bridge, but the explosives didn't go off. The character of SS-General Ludwig, in the epic war film "A Bridge too Far" (1977), was a composite character based on both SS-Brigf. Harmel and SS-Staf. Walter Harzer.
