GRAVES James A. "Chief" Graves 78, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2007 in Jacksonville, FL following a brief illness. Chief Graves was born on April 8, 1929 in Logan, West Virginia, the son of the late Leslie H. and Sally P. Graves of Logan. Following school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. and served a tour in China during World War II. He located to Fernandina in 1954 where he was a fireman with the Fernandina Fire Department. In 1965 he was made Fire Chief of the Fernandina Beach Fire Department and served for twenty two years until retiring in 1987. He served as a commissioner for the Nassau County Ocean Highway and Port Authority from 1984 until 1988. His son, Richard Allen Graves passed away in 2005. Chief Graves leaves behind his life partner and best friend, Nell Pittman, his two daughters, Brenda G. (Kenneth) Stivers and Bobbie G. Northey all of Fernandina Beach, his brothers, Billy R. (Shirley) Graves of Abingdon, VA, and John H. (Mary) Graves of Fernandina Beach, FL, his sister Margaret Graves of Davin, W. VA, and seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday from the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard. The family will receive friends 10:00 am until the service time. He will be laid to rest in Bosque Bello Cemetery at a later date. in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army-Hope House, P.O. Box 502, Fernandina Beach, Florida 32035.
