Mr. Hensley graduated from McGaheysville High School, and later served in the U.S. Army.
He married Elizabeth Sue Hensley on Dec. 16, 1961, who preceded him in death in September of 2010.
Leon raised cattle and farmed for many years and was known for his pumpkin patch, which was attended by many area schools. In his retirement, he drove a school bus for Rockingham County. He was a member of the Mount Olive Brethren Church in Pineville since 1936, and as pastimes, he enjoyed hunting and bowling.
Surviving are his stepson, Wayne A. Ryman and wife, Becky, of Penn Laird; two sisters, June H. Liskey of Harrisonburg and Pauline R. Miller of Pineville; two stepgrandchildren, Steven and Wayne Lee Hall of Harrisonburg; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Caleb, Jacob and Marcus Hall of Penn Laird, and McKenzie Hall of Grottoes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Emory, Earl, Carl and Arnold Hensley, and one sister, Marie Palmer.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, with the Rev. Dr. A.L. Hensley of South Carolina and the Rev. A.D. Tice officiating.
A private family interment will be at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. American Legion rites will be performed by the Dayton Post No. 27.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Olive Brethren Church, 2977 Pineville Road, McGaheysville, VA 22840.

Note: Leon was also married to Willetta Cecellia Courtney, daughter of John Courtney. She was born June 26, 1922 in Hancock, Maryland, and died March 25, 1968 in Rockingham County, Virginia.
