Dr. Bierer was the eldest of 2 sons, and lived in many places throughout the U.S. before settling in Columbia, S.C. He married Virginia Murphey in 1931, with whom he had seven children. He received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1934. He went on to become an Avian Pathologist and professor at Clemson University in S.C., and wrote and published a total of eight books during his lifetime - 2 on veterinary medicine, and 6 on Indian Lore (mainly South Carolina) - many of which are still in circulation today in libraries and bookstores throughout the U.S. His wife Virginia passed from leukemia in 1948, and he later married Betty Meares in 1964. When he wasn't teaching or writing books, Dr. Bierer had a huge passion for fishing. Dr. Bierer officially retired in 1976, but still continued to write, fish, and explore his passion for Native American history. Dr. Bierer died from complications from a brain tumor in 1985. He was survived by his wife Betty, his seven children and numerous grandchildren.
