Mrs. Harner was born February 6, 1927 in Elkton, and was the daughter of the late Van Esmond and Grace Pauline Hitt Gooden. Jean grew up in Elkton and was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church in her youth, where she was active in the choir. She lived in Staunton for many years, before returning to Elkton, where she joined Mt. Olivet Christian Church. She was a graduate of Elkton High School, where she lettered in basketball. She traveled the world with her husband, and loved to visit family and friends, and enjoyed planning trips, family outings and picnics. She worked along with her husband at Harner's Auto Exchange in Staunton, for many years.
On December 24, 1944, she married Marion Malcolm Harner, and after 65 years he preceded her in death on January 10, 2010. Jean is survived by her daughter, Beverly Harner, Charlottesville; in laws, John & Shirley Harner, Susie Short, Helen Gooden, Evelyn Sandy, Helen & Dave Goodmon, Anna Belle Harner and Lorraine Gooden. Besides her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by brothers, Paul Gooden Sr. and Van E. Gooden Jr.; and a sister, Majorie Hall.
Pastor Wayne Wright will conduct the funeral service 2:00 Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Mt. Olivet Christian Church, near McGaheysville. Burial will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 ~ 8:00 Wednesday evening, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
