George W Stine, 73, prominent churchman and practically a lifelong resident of this borough, died from a complication of disease yesterday at 10:00 am in St. Vincent's Hospital, Erie.
The rapid decline in his condition came as a surprise to hundreds of friends who knew him well.
Stricken seriously ill, he was admitted to the Shamokin State Hospital Tuesday March 11. Two days later he was removed to St. Vincent's Hospital here, Friday morning March 16, he was operated upon by a noted specialist.
George W Stine was born December 5, 1860 at Green Ridge, a son of the late John W Stine, for many years Superintendent at the Reliance colliery, and the late Amanda (Fisher) Stine.
His parents brought him to Mount Carmel when he was still a youngster and he remained here until his death.
He worked at the Reliance colliery for about sixty years, serving in various capacities, including fire boss and loader boss. An industrious man, he served his company faithfully and well.
Mr. Stine was a very progressive citizen and the welfare of this community was always uppermost in his heart. He was popular with his fellowmen and reared a fine family.
Religiously, he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
To survive he leaves his wife, Priscilla (Haak) Stine and the following sons and daughters: Richard Stine, this city; Miss Amanda Stine, member of the borough's staff of public school teachers; Rev. Fred W Stine, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church of Andes NY. Also surviving are these additional sons and daughters: John Stine, well known Legionnaire; Harry Stine, Washington DC; Theodore and Ira Stine, this city; Dorothy, wife of Stewart Hartman, McKeesport,; and Ruth, wife of Harold Davis, this city.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Sarah Fagley, this city and two brothers, Howard Stine of Gibraltar and Edward Stine of this city.
