He married Mary Healey on 30 Jan 1869 at St. Michael's church in Ashton Under Lyne. After the birth of their first son, Joseph Patrick Gannon, the couple sailed for America in 1870 and ended up in Chicago, Illinois where he worked as a fireman at the Chicago Firehouse on E. 14th Street.
