Services on Monday for Mrs. D'Oench At Manhasset
Eldest Daughter of Grace Line Founder Is dead at the age of 75
A requiem mass will be offered in St. Mary's R. C. Church, Manhasset, Monday for Mrs. Alice Grace D'Oench, eldest daughter of the late William R. Grace, Mayor of New York City from 1880-1888 and founder of the Grace Lines, Burial will be private.
Mrs. D'Oench died unexpectedly Thursday night at her home, Sunset Hill, Manhasset at the age of 75. She was one of Manhasset's largest property owners and had resided there many years,, Although never active socially , she was always a ready contributor to local charities.
Surviving are two sons William Grace Holloway and Russell Grace D'Oench; two brothers, Joseph P. Grace and William Russell Grace. and two sisters Mrs. George Edward Kent and Miss Louise Grace all of Long Island.
Was Married Twice
Her first husband, William E. Holloway, died in 1892, and her second husband , Albert F. D'Oench died in 1918.
Mrs. D'Oench was born July 11, 1860, on an American Ship anchored off the Chincha Island, near Peru. Her parents were living at the time on the vessel , which was the store ship of her fathers business there and the nucleus around which he built Grace Lines.
Mr. Grace was descended from Raymond le Gros, a Norman Baron who participated in the occupation of Ireland by the Plantagenet kings and gained wide possessions in Kilkenny and the surrounding area. The family's lands were later confiscated by the English.
Born in Rivertown, County Cork, Ireland, in 1832 young Grace-the le Gros family had changed it name to Grace-ran away a the age of 14 and came to this country on a sailing ship. In 1850 , after he had returned to his native land, he left again to go to work for Bryce & Co, merchants, at Callao, Peru, and later becoming a partner, at which time the firms name was changed to Bryce, Grace & Co.
Came to N.Y. in 1865
He came to New York in 1865 and later formed the W. R. Grace & Co. firm, which carried on an extensive shipping an trading business in many parts of the world. Branches were established in San Francisco, London, Peru and Chili.
Mrs. D'Oench''s mother was the former Lillian Gilchrist, daughter of Capt. George W. Gilchrist, master of a ship who lived at Thomaston ME. Miss Gilchrist met Mr. Grace during a cruise to South America on one of her father's vessels
