William and Patience lived for a short while in Haverhill NH, then moved to Bath NH. On 11 Apr 1826 they sold their land in Bath and in May 1827 arrived in Avon township, Oakland Co. MI. Two months later they, together with William and Olive Burbank, were among the first ten organizers of the First Congregational Church established in Michigan located in the town of Avon, or Oakland, later known as Rochester. They remained in Avon until March 1828 or 1829 when they moved to Washington township near Romeo, Macomb Co. MI "where they took possession of a 96-acre homestead...contiguous to the eastern boundary of the village on the south side of St. Clair."
