Willie was the son of Tom & Emily (Johnson) Coates. He had 5 siblings Arthur Coates, Emma Coates Proctor, Jeressa Coates Whone, Lilly Coates, & Ann Elizabeth Coates who died at a very young age. Willie came to the United States in New York on May 29, 1909. On May 5, 1910 Willie married Sarah Elizabeth Hudson in Massachusetts. They had one child Winifred Mary Coates. For many years Willie and Sarah ran a deli in Philadelphia.
