Auto Race Car Driver. He won in 1959 and 1962 Indianapolis 500 car race during a six year span which he finished no less than fourth. When he was 14, he built a Ford hot rod with parts from his father's wrecking yard business and began drag racing. He was a fighter and bomber pilot in World War II. After the war, he returned to Southern California and began Racing Midgets. He passed his rookie test at the Indianapolis Speedway in 1951 and finished 27th that year. During his career, he won 26 champ car races and two U.S. Auto Club Titles, his final victory was on April 24, 1966 in Trenton, New Jersey.
