HICKORY - Carolyn Lavania Sigman, 65, of Hickory, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Miss Sigman was born Nov. 9, 1944, at Norfolk Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., daughter of the late Francis Rockett Sigman and Mary Moose Sigman.
Since 1945, she was a lifelong resident of Catawba County, and graduated from Bunker Hill High School. Carolyn worked in the hosiery and cable industries. She was an outstanding employee at Corning Cable Systems until her early retirement in 2001 due to her health. Carolyn loved her cars and cats, and she enjoyed traveling. Her main hobby was shopping. Her greatest adventure was traveling to Mexico in the 1960s by car with her best friend, Fran.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Eddie Lawrence Moose and Willie Huit Moose; paternal grandparents, Martin Luther Sigman and Pearl Wike Sigman; and stepmothers, Nannie Sigmon Sigman and Maude Towery Sigman.
Carolyn is survived by her sisters, Willie Pearl Yount and husband, Paul, and Cathy Elizabeth Banner and husband, Randy, all of Conover, and Mary Frances Frazier and husband, John, of Lenoir; brothers, Martin Lawrence Sigman and wife, Deanna, of Conover and John Leslie Sigman of Hickory; nieces and nephews, Paula and Derek Teague, Lauren and Jennifer Yoder, David and Janell Yount, Kacy, Jana, Abby and Reece Yount, Eric Frazier, Andrew and Jenna Frazier, Ethan Frazier, Matthew, Christina and Jonathan Banner, Eric Huffman, Tamara Lutes and Elizabeth and Jacob Lutes; and her best friend since the fourth grade, Fran Snyder Alcala of Charlotte.
The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Wesley R. Frye officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m., prior to the service, at the church. The family would like to express its thanks and gratitude to the staff of the Lutheran Home-West and the outstanding doctors, nurses and staff at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 579, Claremont, N.C. 28610 or the Humane Society of Catawba County, P.O. Box 63, Hickory, N.C. 28603.
