ASHEVILLE – Cecil Grey "C.G." Runion, Jr., 83, of 385 Olivette Road passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.

A lifelong resident of Buncombe County and a long time member of Victory Baptist Church where he served as Church Sunday School Secretary, Class Secretary, Church Treasurer for 11 years, assistant to the Church Treasurer and served as Deacon for 32 years.

He served on the Board of Directors for West Buncombe Fire Department for 26 years and was a member of the 108th Division Retirees Breakfast Group.

He served as a Technical Sergeant in the Army in the Support Unit with the West Pacific Base Command during WWII and remained with the Army Reserve and retired as Chief Warrant Officer. He worked with the Federal Civil Service for 30 years and more recently with the Employment Security Commission for 17 years.

He was a loving husband, dad and granddaddy.

Mr. Runion was the son of the late Cecil Grey Runion and Mollie Belle Thorpe Runion. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Thelma Norton, Annie Lanier and Cecelia Roberson; brothers, Lester Runion and Leroy Runion.

Surviving are his wife of over 60 years, Susie Bell Briggs Runion, whom he married December 22, 1948, of the home; daughters, Dianne Player (Buddy) of Asheville; Sharon Morris of Laurens, SC; grandchildren, Tanya Bailes (Brian) of Chapin, SC, Kayce Morris of Philadelphia, PA, Alan Grey Morris of Laurens, SC; great grandchildren, Ashton Bailes and Kensie Bailes; sisters, Joan Anderson of Asheville and Argylle Woolley of Charlotte; and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Friday at Victory Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Chase, Rev. James Lamb and Rev. Larry Sprinkle officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory with military rites conducted by the Erwin High School JROTC.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Fervent Sunday School Class and the Sunshine Club at Victory Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at Victory Baptist Church.
