George Wilder Kidder purchased a half-interest in a machine shop at Alstead, being a member of the firm of Roob & Kidder for two years, selling out in the fall of 1869. He appeared in 1870 living in Alstead, NH, and removed to Staatsburg, Dutchess County, NY, shortly thereafter. He was a carpenter; then began dealing in lumber and building material as a member of the firm of Herrick & Kidder, which continued for five years, or until a fire in April 1875, when the partnership was dissolved. George Kidder for the next ten years employed by the Mutual Benefit Ice Co., being weight master in the summer and superintendent on the river during the winter season. In 1887 he bought out the coal business of James Roach, at Staatsburg, to which he immediately added a stock of lumber and building material, since then he carried on a very successfully business.
