First Lieutenant Davis was stationed at Foster Army Airfield in Victoria, Texas. He was the pilot assigned to ferrying the airfield's baseball team. While returning from a game in northern Texas, and after departing the airfield at Waco, he was killed when the Beechcraft AT-7 he was piloting crashed near Smiley, in Gonzales County, Texas, claiming the lives of all six aboard the transport airplane. Investigators concluded that the engines were performing at full power when the aircraft collided with terrain during the nighttime flight. They speculated Lt. Davis fell asleep after engaging the aircraft's automated flight control system.
