CHAPIN. Elizabeth (Stewart) Chapin, died Thursday, (April 18, 1996), at Hughes Convalescent, West Hartford, where she had been a patient for three years. She was a resident of The Holiday, West Hartford, from 1990-1993 and in both places she was very appreciative of the loving care that she received. She was precedeased by her husband of 56 years, Gurden W. Chapin, in 1987. Born in Tarrytown, NY, February 27, 1911, she was the 4th child of Elizabeth Young Stewart and James Stewart, and she was the first of their children born in this country after they immigrated from Scotland. She lived most of her life in the Devon section of Milford, CT, where she was an active member of the United Church of Christ. She enjoyed many friendships through her work with the Women's Service Guild there. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Jean Chapin and her husband, Vernon E. Martin, of Bloomfield, CT; a granddaughter, Amy Chapin Hathaway and her husband, G. Jeffrey Withers, three great-grandchildren; Molly, Jarron, and Tiana Withers, all of Alstead, NH. In addition, she leaves a brother and two sisters; John Stewart and his wife, Margery of Sun City Center, FL; Janet Fox and her husband, Walston Fox of Ocala, FL; Margaret Lund of Hollywood, FL.; her older siblings were James Stewart, Jean Stewart; and Anna Johnson. In Milford she leaves her brother-in-law, Harry Johnson and her sisters-in-law, Margaret Stewart, Hazel Boulton and Ethel Doucette. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
