Typhoid fever claimed its first victim In the community this morning with the death of William Hill Pugh, 74 -year -old retired farmer, at his home on Jesup avenue.

Mr. Pugh was one of 23 persons in Christian county and the city reported to health authorities as being ill of typhoid this summer. Only a. few blocks from the Pugh residence Is a family of four persons ill with the disease. A Red Cross nurse has been taking charge of the latter family.

Funeral services for Mr. Pugh will be held at. the residence or Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with Dr. A. R. Kasey and the Rev. Charles I. Stephenson conducting the rites. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

Mr. Pugh was born in Stewart County, Tennessee, and was. engaged in farming the greater part of his life. He is survived by his wife. Mrs. Luretha Pugh: three children, Fred Pugh of Belfort, N. Y., Mrs. N. B. Newton of Oak Grove., and Monnie Pugh of Ashland; a foster son, Irvin Gosnell of Sheffield, Ala., and a number of other more distant relatives.

He was a prominent man in his community and was an active member of the Methodist Church, taking a great interest in church affairs. He formerly operated general merchandise stores at Weaver's Slot, Tenn., and on West Seventh street, in this city.
