According to the Leeds town history, Thomas was preceded to Leeds by his brother Joseph, who settled on Quaker Ridge Road in 1800, on what was later known as the John Gilmore farm. The small Cape still stands. Joseph recognized that area of Leeds needed a mill, so he persuaded his brother Thomas to join him. At the time Thomas had a thriving business in Bath making shoes and dealing in East India goods.

Thomas was married to Mary Lemont, and by the time he arrived in Leeds in 1802 he had two sons. Thomas purchased the land and water power at Coffin Brook on Quaker Ridge Road, and erected a dam and mill. Both the dam and mill burned, so he erected another with the help of Elias Lane. The War of 1812 impacted the lumber business, the mill was idle that year, so he built his house.

Altogether Thomas and Mary had ten children, of which three died young.
